Reggio Emilia boosts urban mobility with Urbiotica’s smart guidance system

Italy continues to move forward in the digitization of parking, and Reggio Emilia joins this process with the implementation of a guidance system based on Urbiotica IoT sensors hand in hand with Parkit. With the aim of improving the management of parking spaces and facilitating the drivers’ experience, 36 U-Spot 2.0 sensors have been installed.

Reggio Emilia, like other cities undergoing digital transformation, has identified congestion arising from the search for parking as a key challenge for urban mobility. Drivers often spend too much time trying to find a free space, which increases traffic and polluting emissions. Faced with this situation, it has implemented sensors to optimize parking occupancy and provide real-time information to users.

With a lifetime of up to 10 years, they operate autonomously through LoRaWAN and NB-IoT connectivity, eliminating the need for constant maintenance. With over 99% reliability in vehicle detection, they can detect the presence of cars at each plaza and transmit availability information to drivers via signage panels and mobile apps. In addition, Urbiotica’s cloud-based platform enables the city to monitor parking usage and make decisions based on accurate data.

The implementation of this guidance system has the potential to reduce traffic jostling, as drivers can proceed directly to available spaces without unnecessary circling. By transmitting real-time information on parking availability, it can also contribute to lower pollutant emissions and better space management by local authorities. In addition, optimizing parking occupancy could facilitate a more efficient user experience.

This type of parking digitization solutions contribute to improve urban mobility, offering a scalable and applicable model in other cities interested in optimizing parking management and reducing congestion.
