Parking guidance for the ATM Barcelona Park & Ride area to lower urban traffic and pollution in Barcelona
To lower urban traffic to a minimum and in parallel to lower the effects on pollution in Barcelona
Barcelona has had to cope with a huge increase in private vehicle traffic in recent decades. The City Hall wanted to combat pollution from traffic by developing a Low Emissions Zones program that restricted access to the city for the most polluting vehicles. To support the new policy, ATM sought to encourage people to park their vehicles in free parking areas before arriving in the city.
The Barcelona project consisted of informing drivers of free parking spots in order to make parking easier and improve the user experience.
The Park & Ride solution was installed in 10 areas in Barcelona within ATM’s Low Emissions Zones program. U-Spot sensors were installed to monitor parking spot by spot, and U-Flow sensors were used to monitor capacity in a limited area.
The data captured by the sensors are transformed into useful information to report on the availability of free spots at strategic points at the entryways to the city using message signs or mobile apps.
In this way, drivers are informed of the availability of parking spots in these areas so they can go directly to the zones with the most spots and make the parking process easier.

- Makes parking easier by encouraging citizens to use these areas.
