Lidl drives smart parking in supermarkets with Urbiotica technology

Country: Spain

Key technologies:U-Spot VISIO, Smart Parking Platform (U-Admin), parking guidance, computer vision, real-time data analytics
The challenge

Smart parking in supermarkets has become a key solution to improve customer experience, optimize internal circulation and better manage parking space occupancy. In this context, Lidl is driving the parking experience with Urbiotica's smart guidance technology.

With high vehicle turnover and a limited number of spaces, supermarkets and shopping centers like Lidl face the challenge of ensuring a smooth, fast and frustration-free parking experience for their customers.

Congestion at access points, wasted time searching for a space and a lack of clear information on the actual availability of spaces affect both user satisfaction and the operational efficiency of the venue.

The solution

Lidl has digitized its parking lot in Europe with Urbiotica’s guidance technology, using cameras connected to the U-Admin platform to detect spaces in real time and guide users to free spaces.

The system is implemented in Lidl Greece (38 seats, 3 cameras) and in Latvia, Riga (60 seats, 4 cameras) and Sporta (83 seats, 3 cameras).

This solution combines per-space detection, with U-Spot VISIO, and the power of cloud processing, being compatible with any IP camera on the market. In addition, it is GDPR compliant and adapts to any weather condition or parking configuration, making it an ideal choice for the retail environment and for smart parking projects in supermarkets and off-street parking.

The solution allows real-time monitoring of parking space occupancy, detection of violations and analysis of usage patterns, providing a complete and continuous view of the operation of loading and unloading zones.

Each camera is able to cover multiple places, detecting stay times, rotation and irregular behaviors with high accuracy. The information is centralized in Urbiotica’s management platform, from where historical data can be analyzed, areas can be compared and the impact of control campaigns can be evaluated.

The system is ready to integrate with ScancarScancar, allowing to evolve towards an automated control model in which the detection of an infraction generates an alert and triggers the capture of photographic evidence, closing the enforcement cycle in an efficient way.

Benefits of implementing this solution
  • Customer experience: drivers more easily locate an available space, reducing search time and the stress associated with parking.
  • Increased fluidity: unnecessary turns within the site are reduced, with a positive impact on internal circulation and sustainability.
  • High reliability: the system offers detection with more than 99% accuracy based on deep learning.
  • International scalability: Lidl has replicated the model in different countries, demonstrating its confidence in Urbiotica’s technology and its efficient and cost-effective operation.
  • Sector benchmark: this case reinforces Urbiotica’s position as a provider of smart parking solutions also in off-street projects, beyond the urban environment.
